"I have purchased the Springfield YMCA. I plan to tear it down and turn the land into a nature preserve. There, I will hunt the deadliest game of all: man.”
-Rainier Wolfcastle

The Running Man meets Survivor in Scott Wiper’s The Condemned. This classic "man hunting man” scenario is well executed (pun intended) and punctuated by top-notch action sequences that are sure to please anyone looking for a few hours of violence to liven up their day. Ten death-row convicts from around the world are recruited by an unscrupulous media mogul (Robert Mammone) to participate in a no-holds-barred battle royal to the death. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to the producers, one of the "criminals” they have selected to participate in the game, Jack Conrad ("Stone Cold” Steve Austin), is a highly trained U.S. Military operative with no intention of allowing the immoral event to take place. With only 30 hours to put an end to the death match before the game is called on account of exploding ankle bracelets, Jack must fight for his life and hurry to stop the live Internet broadcast of the carnage. Former WWE superstar "Stone Cold” Steve Austin easily takes on his first major film role, portraying a believable tough guy (at 6’2, 250 lbs., this is not a difficult stretch) opposite veteran British hard man Vinnie Jones. The DVD extras include a five-part "making of” feature that’s a little more in-depth than the average disc, a short feature with Steve Austin and Vinnie Jones reminiscing about their first meeting in the ring at the WWE Capital Carnage event, and a two-minute throwaway documentary of Austin’s promotional appearance at Movie World in Australia. The Condemned provides exactly what it promises: a few good fights, some explosions and a whole lot of ass kickin’. If you’re looking for an existential examination of man’s inhumanity to man, you might be able to dig out a few ounces of philosophy here and there, but you'll have to tiptoe through the minefield to find it.
