Chaundon

After watching nearly ever other member of his Justus League crew get their respective full-length shine on, cocky cameo man Chaundon finally takes a crack at a proper album with Carnage, a record that dishes out braggadocio at an unchecked premium. Wearing his Punchline Rhyme School alumnus status across his chest like a comic book hero, the Bronx lyricist relies on charm and well-timed comic injections to help him avoid the ever-threatening Canibus trap of one-dimensional wordplay. It’s a trick that serves him well in moderate doses, though the style is worn noticeably threadbare by record’s end. Backed by a healthy collection of beats provided by 9th Wonder, Khrysis and Illmind, Chaundon does manage to switch it up a bit via the focused tale of a girl lost to prostitution in "Angie” before engaging in a murderous breakup with Jean Grae on "Gone” and battling the stress of the grind with Darien Brockington in tow on "Understanding.” It all works out to a decent solo set from a man who still proves at his best when playing with others.
