Ilpo Vaisanen

Asuma

BY I. KhiderPublished May 1, 2001

This CD is the result of one-half of Pan Sonic, Ilpo Vaisanen, who takes a lighter and more playful approach to the duo's click-dub technique. Asuma may require a few listens to "get," but this is basically Pan Sonic with less muscle but more brains and more fun. These tracks seem to sneak up on you from the distance, appearing right behind you, as if the sounds were there all along, waiting for the fade-in. Track five, "Vallitseva," is my favourite, with its strong rhythmic head-bobbing drive, which sounds like a boat cruising along a cottage lake while the neighbour chops wood in the distance. Definitely a more elaborate approach to the click, prog or techno sound than most stuff already out there.
