Taking an interesting approach to something many of us have no doubt felt growing up in this great multi-cultural bastion, 'Peg City MC Nestor Wynrush dissects Canadiana and the immigrant experience through the prism of hip-hop on new disc Trinnipeg !78. From language issues at school, newcomer "poverty" and hood violence to college radio tape collections and old country home cookin', it's all on the menu as the observational lyricist breaks down what it is to be the child of foreigners in the Great White North. But as admirable a project as this may sound, the delivery on Trinnipeg is just a little too hit and miss. While cuts like the bustling "Winnipeg South Blues," Grand Analog-led reissue "Old Mine Town" and nostalgic school days tune "Liks" offer a fair balance of solid beats toped with tight flows and relatable lyrics, the middle of the record drops off into a morass of plodding rhythms and the sound of an MC simply too far below his BPM comfort zone. A better track selection would have done this album a world of good.
