Pixies

Right off the top of this hour-and-a-half long performance, the Pixies strike a relaxed, playful stance with notoriously cantankerous front-man Frank Black teasing his band-mates and intentionally calling out false starts. If the legendary band’s recent reunion tours passed you by, this Club Date Live series instalment will fill you in on pretty much exactly what you missed as the band casually runs through an impressive 29 career-spanning titles to the delight of a couple hundred fans of various ages and finite ethnicities. Hefty Frank sweats a lot, hot soccer mom Kim Deal smokes an impressive number of cigarettes and Joey Santiago and David Lovering keep their cue-ready eyes nervously locked on their testy front-man while effectively going through the nostalgic, money-making motions. As is typically the case with this DVD series, the sound quality is top notch and the show is expertly shot and edited to maximise the virtual experience of being on hand for he gig. Bonus material includes a live performance from 1986 featuring the impossibly youthful Pixies running through a dozen songs at a local Boston bar. Understandably, the sound and video quality of the seemingly third-generation VHS footage is woeful but it makes for a cool artefact just the same.
