Well Deep: Ten Years Of Big Dada Recordings

BY Kevin JonesPublished Nov 26, 2007

It’s been ten years since the once dominant, trailblazing indie label Ninja Tune spun off its equally noteworthy hip-hop-focused Big Dada imprint, and the sub label’s decade-long promotion of sonically progressive underground acts is chronicled in this illuminating retrospective. Well Deep is broken down into two separate releases: a double-disc CD collection highlighting the careers of landmark acts like Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Diplo and newcomers Spank Rock, and a half-hour documentary DVD that also features every video ever released by the label. The documentary is essentially a well-sequenced set of interviews with the label’s founders and major contributors spliced with video clips, concert footage and artistic motion shots of London’s hectic city streets. It’s a comprehensive companion disc that, aside from helping put some faces to some of Big Dada’s more obscure figures, also shines a light not only their careers but on the history of the UK hip-hop scene.
