Caribou's Thumping "Honey" Blurs the Line Between Projects

Exclaim! Staff Picks

Dan Snaith typically files his songs into two categories: there's Caribou for the more melodic material with vocals, and Daphni for the instrumental dance bangers.

"Honey," his latest Caribou single, blurs the distinction. It's a straight-up four-on-the-floor thumper that builds to bowel-rumbling bass drops straight outta the EDM/dubstep playbook. There's also a brief vocal hook — which I'm pretty sure is a sampled guest singer, but just might be Snaith's own pitched-up voice. There are some characteristically pretty synth textures, but the overall effect is one of visceral release rather than studied songcraft.
