Pure is a racing game. Yes, another racing game. But this one is by Disney. No, wait, come back. This is no Mickey Mouse Kart but a serious off-roader. Except not too serious, which is why this arcade-indebted quad-racer is so awesome.
What Disney actually brought to the table was a blasé attitude towards the simulator-style games that dominate modern racers, and in that sense the games name is something of a misnomer. While the game is called Pure, its not about creating a realistic experience. While it does offer ridiculously customizable four-wheeler ATVs, its not about auto-geekery.
Pure is about pulling tricks and stunts, plain and simple. The more the better; the crazier ones you do the bigger your nitrous boost metre builds and the faster you can go meaning the more air you can get and cooler moves you can make. Tricks are pretty much mandatory to win and the game offers an almost Skate-like selection though in freestyle mode you dont even need to worry about coming in first. You can claim victory by simply racking up the most outrageous combos, an even more satisfying road to victory. Beating the tough AI racers is good, besting the 16-person multiplayer is even better.
Oh, and did I mention its pretty as all get out? Maybe its because I recently got a projector TV so Im in wow mode but racing through the dusty back roads of New Mexico or the mountainscapes of New Zealand looks freaking amazing blown up real good, especially when youre pulling death-defying stunts, gravity defying jumps and vertigo-inducing airs every few seconds. Pure fun.
