Fronted by the former lead singer of Haste The Day (Jimmy Ryan), Trenches are a verbose array of hardcore and ambience. Ranging from heavy grunting chugs to delicate piano and dissonant tones, The Tide Will Swallow Us Whole is just as destructive as it is beautiful. Sonically the shifts in this album are reminiscent of Spartas Wiretap Scars ("Eyes Open) but do alter and bring forth a sludge-like texture more akin to Torche. Throughout this album there is no safety in a consistent style of sound. Each song stays within the borders of sludge, hardcore and experimental but the individuality on The Tide Will Swallow Us Whole is what makes this one of the most exciting releases Solid State has had in years. Trenches wander into the heavy landscapes with "Calling, "End and "Sacrament, which is easily the most engaging song of the album, with its endless, yet catchy, guitar sounds. Indianapolis, INs Trenches have put forth a debut album that cant, and wont, be ignored.
